An Auspicious Journey: Witnessing Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra in Puri

Puri, a town steeped in spirituality and renowned for its world-famous Rath Yatra, holds a magnetic charm for devotees from all corners of the globe. This travel blog recounts my memorable experience of visiting Puri from my hometown, Bhubaneswar, to witness the grandeur of Lord Jagannath’s chariot procession on the 21st of June, 2023.

  1. Anticipation Builds – Planning for Rath Yatra
Having longed to be a part of the revered Rath Yatra, I made sure to be in Bhubaneswar, my hometown, a few days before the auspicious day. The excitement and anticipation among devotees were palpable as the date approached.
  2. Scorching Heat of Bhubaneswar
The days leading up to the Rath Yatra were accompanied by sweltering temperatures, with the mercury soaring up to 40 degrees Celsius. Concerned about the extreme heat, my friends and family advised me to consider attending the Rath Yatra the following day.
  3. Heeding Wise Advice
Taking the advice of loved ones into consideration, we decided to alter our plans and visit Puri on the 21st in the afternoon instead. This decision ensured our safety and well-being during the procession.
  4. Setting off to Puri
On the eventful day, we set off from Bhubaneswar after enjoying a hearty lunch and taking a short rest. Accompanied by my parents, I took the wheel and embarked on the approximately 60-kilometer journey to Puri. The well-maintained roads ensured a smooth and pleasant drive.
  5. Finding Parking and Opting for an Auto Rickshaw
Upon reaching Puri, we were fortunate to find parking space in a kind local’s house on the outskirts of the town. From there, we hopped on an auto-rickshaw to make our way to the heart of the Rath Yatra festivities.
  6. Serendipitous Weather and a Lesser Crowd
To our delight, the weather in Puri that day was significantly cooler compared to Bhubaneswar. The decreased heat, coupled with a relatively smaller crowd due to the rescheduled visit, created an ideal setting for a spiritual experience.
  7. Awe-Inspiring Darshan at the Gundicha Temple
As we made our way to the revered Gundicha Temple, where Lord Jagannath and his siblings’ chariots were parked, a sense of awe and reverence washed over us. We were fortunate to witness the majestic deities up close and offer our heartfelt prayers amidst a serene ambiance.
  8. An Unexpected Divine Connection
It seemed as though divine forces were at play, aligning our visit with the perfect opportunity for a remarkable darshan of the lord. The experience left an indelible impression on our hearts, filling us with immense gratitude and joy.
  9. Return to Bhubaneswar
After an enchanting day in Puri, we bid adieu to the sacred town and embarked on our journey back to Bhubaneswar in the evening. The return drive was equally smooth, allowing us time to reflect on the blessings we had received during our pilgrimage.

Conclusion:
My journey from Bhubaneswar to Puri to witness Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra was a treasured experience that exceeded all expectations. The wise decision to alter our plans ensured our comfort and safety while still allowing us to be part of the grand festivities. I will forever cherish the divine darshan and the serenity that enveloped Puri on that auspicious day. #JaiJagannath.
